Just the right place to spend a wonderful and relaxing holiday. Tourism has hardly touched this village and “filoxenia” (Greek for hospitality) is simply the motto of Episkopi. A tradition deeply rooted in the Cretan way of life. So being a guest in this village will show you first hand what Cretan hospitality really means.

The name Episkopi dates back to the second Byzantine period on Crete. During this time the bishop seat of the coastal village Hersonissos was moved further inland. Episkopi means bishop seat. Many small Byzantine churches with frescos from the Cretan School of Renaissance
(14th/15th century) are found in and around the village.

Minoan finds from the 2nd millennium B.C. have been discovered around Episkopi. Two important places of Minoan worship the Eileithyia cave and the Skotino cave are not far away.                 Minoan Script

Today Episkopi is a municipality consisting of the following villages: Episkopi, Sgourokefali, Aitania, Kaenourgio Chorio, Galipe, Galifa and the settlements of Stamni, Skopela and Chohlakies.

The main source of income is from agriculture. Olive groves and vineyards surround the villages. Life moves with a different pace compared to the coastal tourist areas. This is Crete the way it was and the way it is meant to be.
